Pickleball is easy to learn, fun to play, and perfect for all ages. Whether you’re stepping onto the court for the first time or just need a refresher, understanding these core rules will help you play with confidence and enjoy the game more.
1. The Serve Must Be Underhand
Every rally starts with an underhand serve. The paddle must contact the ball below waist level, and the serve must travel diagonally into the opponent’s service box. The server must keep both feet behind the baseline until the ball is hit.
2. Follow the Two-Bounce Rule
After the serve, the ball must bounce once on the receiving side and once on the serving side before either team can hit the ball out of the air. This rule keeps rallies fair and prevents early aggressive shots at the net.
3. No Volleys in the Kitchen
The area closest to the net is called the non-volley zone, or “kitchen.” Players are not allowed to hit the ball out of the air while standing in this zone. You may enter the kitchen only after the ball has bounced.
4. Only the Serving Team Can Score
Points are earned only by the team that is serving. If the serving team wins a rally, they score a point and continue serving. If they lose the rally, the serve passes to the opposing side.
5. Games Go to 11 — Win by 2
Most pickleball games are played to 11 points, and you must win by at least two points. Some casual or tournament games may go to 15 or 21, but the win-by-two rule always applies.
Final Tip
Pickleball is meant to be fun and social. Focus on learning the rules, improving control, and enjoying the game rather than worrying about perfection.
